Management is
becoming a complex business. Todays decision-makers have so much information and so
many subdivisions in the organizations they head that they have been required to seek new
techniques for reducing operations to manageable proportions. One innovation has been
Operations Research, a highly quantified approach to decision-making in business and
industry which has gained credence due to the demands of large-scale activity. |
Operations
Research relies on the formulation of economic effectiveness criteria derived from
economic theory and related disciplines. With these tools, specialists assist senior
managers by developing mathematical models of business operations that portray the
interdependent aspects of the various features of a large corporation. |
Central
Connecticut State Universitys program in Operations Research is one of the first
efforts by an American University to offer such education at the baccalaureate level. |
|
CAREERS
IN OPERATIONS RESEARCH
|
Due to the
advent of the high-tech information society, employment prospects for Operations Research
specialists are expected to increase sharply. For entry-level positions, an undergraduate
degree in mathematics or quantitative economics, which includes a solid background in
statistics and computer science, is necessary. In addition, a second field of
concentration such as business or economics, where numerous applications of Operations
Research techniques are found, is desirable. |
|
THE
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
|
Central offers
students the option of majoring in either Economics or Mathematics with a Specialization
in Operations Research. In either case, majors receive a Bachelor of Arts degree. |
In the
57-credit-hour program, students complete a core within their "home" department
and supplement it with additional courses. Majors can expect to reach the levels of Macro-
and Micro Economics, Economic Forecasting, Mathematical Economics, Econometrics, Advanced
Calculus, Linear Algebra, Advanced Statistics, Numerical Analysis, and Computer Simulation
Techniques. |
No
concentration is required for persons who choose this major. |
|
GRADUATE SCHOOL
|
Either degree
track provides preparation for graduate study in the field of: Business, Economics,
Industrial Engineering, Insurance, Finance, Mathematics, Pubic Administration or
Statistics as well as Operations Research. |
At this time,
more than fifty of the nations leading graduate schools offer programs of study in
Operations Research. In fact, Centrals Department of Mathematics and Statistics
recently has added a Specialization of Operations Research to its M.A. Program in
Mathematics. |
|
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
|
Majors in
Operations Research have the opportunity to take part in the Universitys Cooperative
Education Program. This program allows students to alternate six-month periods of
full-time study with full-time paid employment. The program can thus be completed in five
years. |
Such
experiences enhance a students prospects for employment after graduation Many
"Co-op Students" are offered full-time positions by their cooperative program
employer. The proximity of Central to many of the largest corporations in the nation
afford the Operations Research major a particularly attractive opportunity. |
